blockbuster or blockbust?

Sunday, March 19th, 2006, 9:54 am, by mg.

Three months is all you get. If you have not rented anything, you are wiped from the system. Then, you have to do it all over again. I don’t understand the logic. Blockbuster is making the customer, and the employee do needless work. It’s info in a computer system, for goodness’s sake. How can that possibly be an issue? I’m a customer. I have the money they want.

Before I knew that I was wiped out, I was standing in line (if you could call it a line). Three kids, running the store. Three points of chaos, uh, I mean contact, to rent a dvd from—at least that’s the simple concept. What I witnessed was the before mentioned chaos. Three people with three lines, and they were all trying to do each other’s jobs—climbing all over each other— when they should have controlled their own lane and situation. The result…slow and confusing service. A bad experience.

When I finally get up to the front of the line, two of them have to stop helping their customers and explain to me that I had been removed from the face of the earth. If I had brought my card, (which I’ve never needed before) they could restore me with the account number on the back (I guess I am in the system somewhere) but without the number, they can’t restore the account. What a cluster (explicative). All this time wasted by me driving there and waiting in line, taking up a minimum of two employees time, and then having to open a new account. I opted to save everyone time, and vowed to never do business with Blockbuster again—they haven’t exactly impressed me over the years anyway.

What next? I go over to another chain—Hollywood. The experience was like this. Two people working. They were professional, courteous, and controlling their lanes with qualified skill and ease, providing their customers with a good experience.

I opened an account, found my 2 movies, and got the special—with popcorn candy and drink with 2 movies for $9.99—and was done in 5 minutes. FIVE minutes! And all I need to rent movies is a driver’s license. Plus they give me a buck back on one movie if I return the next day, otherwise all due in 5 days.

Funny…the same movies at blockbuster were only offered as 2-day rentals. I say Blockbust.

p.s. This is not viral marketing. This my personal experience—one good, and one very bad.

Blockbuster gave me the same problem so I went to a Midtown Video, and also got courteous customer service, and only need to show my ID to rent. I also asked if they delete customers after 3 months and they laughed and said no. They thought it was silly just as I did that Blockbuster did that.

I like Hollywood Video. I’m glad you switched. :)
